Is It Possible for Robots to Rule Over the Future World?

After World War II ended, we were ‘supposed’ to be traveling in our flying cars. And by the end of the 20th century, we were supposed to be living on the moon. However, the truth is we are still far from achieving those heights in science and invention. These extravagant theories about the outcomes of revolutionary technology have existed ever since science has come into existence.

The 21st century is the age of computers and Artificial Intelligence. And the theorists have completely utilized the era to produce bizarre theories. One of these theories is the world being taken over by robots in the future.

Yes, it sounds like something straight out of a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi, which to be honest, fuels such theories. However, a few statements made by big shots like Elon Musk indicate that robots may rule over the future world.

But are we just overestimating the power of these AI entities? How realistic is the possibility? Is it possible for robots to rule over the future world?

First Things First, What’s a Robot?

Robots are not only the ones you see in movies that have a human-like body and talk in an electronic voice. A robot can be anything that is programmable by computer and can carry out a complex series of actions automatically.

In the case of robots, the stand-out factor is ‘automation’. This is what distinguishes robots from computers.

Artificially Intelligent Robots

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that is applied to solve tasks where human intelligence is required. But unlike humans, this intelligence is not innate, rather developed based on many algorithms and programs written in computer codes.
Artificially intelligent robots presently are gradually becoming more and more humanoid. Some best humanoid robots currently are Sophia (Hanson Robotics), Nadine (Kokoro Japan), Junko Chihira (Toshiba), etc.
These robots cannot only socialize with their intelligent humor, comments, and remarks; but can also recognize human faces and learn from memory. This is what the AI developers are targeting for the future: cognitive recognition and learning.

The Present Situation of the AI Robots

The most important thing for the future of AI is human-like decision making and analyzing abilities. But at present, there’s a long way to go before we achieve that.
Moreover, the complex sensory system like human skin and the intricate signal perception of the human brain is very difficult to recreate in AI robots. It will be decades after which we will be able to accomplish these human characters in true humanoid robots.
Besides, AI robots perform under very controlled circumstances. These conditions are far from the reality in which human beings survive.

The Threats

There are theories that robots will go full nuclear on the world, destroying the human race and taking over the countries while human beings will go extinct.
But this is just an exaggeration of a few real threats we face.
AI robots may take over our jobs in the future. This will put us through financial distress giving rise to a few other socio-economic problems like addiction, domestic violence, depression, etc.
Moreover, the complex algorithm, the input, and the output of the AI are unfathomable even to its creator to a certain extent. Which runs the risk that the machine may go beyond human control.
According to Elon Musk, it is a fundamental risk to human civilization. Whereas people like Mark Zuckerberg denies the theories and refers to them as an overstatement.
So, is it possible for robots to rule over the future world?

To Sum Up

Robots may never be as intelligent as human beings, let alone more intelligent than them, in terms of decision making or sensing and perceiving. Even if they do become more intelligent, it is unlikely for them to turn out to be villains.
Again, is it possible for robots to rule over the future world? Seems like it might just be a theory afterall.
